I know...some of you are thinking that for someone who gets a little bit gloomy in the wintertime and enjoys the extra daylight in the evening hours, I sound a little bitter. I am. The whole thing just throws me out of whack. (What does that mean exactly? Does anyone really want to be in whack?)
All week everyone at our house has been struggling to come to grips with the whole time change. People have been late to school and to work, mornings are even grumpier than usual, and despite the kids getting up, they still don't want to go to bed at the right time in the evening. I am finding that this is true with D and myself also. Midnight is our standard bedtime. (Once upon a time we were known to stay up until 2 or 3 a.m. regularly, so midnight has been a big improvement). Now midnight sneaks up on us, and we stumble onto it unprepared. Thus for most of this week we have been getting to bed closer to 1 a.m. I feel like I need to set an alarm to alert me to my own bedtime or something.
I know we should probably be going to bed at 10 p.m. or so, but after 9 p.m. when the kids hit the hay is our sanity time. Its our time to just veg out and not have to deal with the whining, the arguing and the lack of reasoning that goes along with five little boys. (Before you get envious of us for having this us time, I will let you know that it is often punctuated by appearances by various children...its rare that we can get through a whole DVD, or even an episode of a TV show on DVD without someone bothering us about something. Plus as a general rule D falls asleep sitting next to me on the couch, and I watch whatever we are watching virtually by myself.)
This habit of staying up late makes it hard to get up in the morning sometimes. I have to confess though that I think I have been waiting for my whole life to be a grown up and get to stay up after the kids are in bed. I have distinct childhood memories of being sent to bed as a child, and before even a decent amount of time had passed we would hear the popcorn popper start up, or the clink of spoons and bowls and we knew Mom and Dad were out there having something good to eat without us. Sometimes it was popcorn, sometimes it was ice cream. I mean, they could have waited until we were at least asleep!
Now that I am a Mom, we continue this tradition in our home. However, out of courtesy to the boys, we watch either part of a movie, or a couple of episodes, and then find a good pausing place before dishing the ice cream or whipping up a batch of popcorn. Now if we could just remember to wash the ice cream bowls...(at least one of the boys takes notice if he finds an empty bowl with the remnants of Tillamook ice cream in it the next morning). We will have to work on that.
For now I will continue to curse Daylight Savings time in the mornings, and to bless it in the evenings when I look outside and its still somewhat light at 7p.m. Of course once summer hits and the boys won't go to bed on time because "Its still morning out!" as they say...I will just be cursing it 24 hours a day.

We always have grand plans of staying up late and watching the shows we have tivo'd throughout the week after the kids go to bed. But it always happens that one or the other falls asleep with the girls and nothing gets watched. Don't believe me? There are already 4 episodes of Amazing Race and we just this past week watched the premiere. Grrrrr~~
But I do love being the grown up now and having the goodies instead of going to bed early. Now I'm the one hiding the good stuff from the kids. ;)
I am soooo with you on the DST being evil. I hate it too. It wasn't so bad when I didn't have kids, but man, it really throws things off when they are around. Sigh. Oh well...And yeah, I am all about the snacks at night. BUT I do wait until my kids are asleep. I would hate for them to know they are missing out. They do find popcorn bags every once in a while, and Hubby has been known to leave out ice cream evidence. :) Oh, and my email is yyendyss at yahoo.
So evil! I just posted about it too. In our state there's a going to be a referendum in 2008 on whether or not we will abolish it. I'm all over that campaign.
