I know it technically isn't Fall until September 20th, but it's close enough for me!
This weekend the rains returned to the North Oregon Coast. It has been fairly sunny all summer. Not hot, but not wet either. Just the kind of summer I love!

I had really been missing the rain, and our grass was getting crunchy and brown, so I was ready for some rain. This week it finally came. It rained Thursday night, and then yesterday and today it has been raining quite a bit. I don't mind the rain most of the time, since it makes things here green and beautiful. It does start to wear on me though when it rains for weeks without pause though. For now, I'm okay with it, even though it means the kids' shoes will be wet all the time.
Today was rainy and cool. It turned my thoughts to all the foods I have been waiting for cooler weather to enjoy. Now I'm craving soups, baked goods and comfort foods. Especially churros. I haven't made churros in a long time, but right now they sound really good.
The thing is, D and I both need to lose some weight. We each need to lose about 20 to 30 pounds, and thinking about Churros isn't helping with that! I need to find some foods that are comforting without adding a blanket of fat to my body. Any ideas for me?

Make soups, but broth based ones. Bean soups are really good.
My struggle is that I crave pastas and potatoes and there isn't really a good way to make those healthy. lol My sister uses spaghetti squash instead of pasta, I tried it and it just didn't work for me. Bummer, because that would have been a great option - so you should try that one. ;)
Have you considered baking with whole grains? I'm a pastry chef. :) I like to cook with whole grains for those people who need to lose a little weight. Also a trick I've been told is to mix 2 Tbs of oat bran with 1 Tbs hot water. It soaks up excess fat throughout the day as well as gives you a nice big dose of fiber. Try cutting your portion sizes down gradually as well.
My first thought when I saw your title was "Oh yes it is!".
Oh my if I knew of any comforting foods that made you skinny I would be all over those. Why is it that everything that is yummy, comforting, delicious and pretty is fattening.
I hate eating salad when it's cold.
Heh heh...I just made pumpkin bread last week. I'm no help.
I have this nice magazine called Healthy Cooking. It's by the Taste of Home people. Anyway they have a "comfort food diet" that really is. I think a lot of their recipes are on-line so you could try them out without having to get the magazine. Lots of simple subs to lower the calories and still taste good.
You can have whole grain or brown rice noodles instead of normal pasta and purple/black potatoes. I know it sounds weird but they taste the same and have much better nutrients in them. You can add fiber to baked items that are made with healthy flours to offset any sugar you use, and try to use honey or natural sweeteners when you bake.
I love fall, too.
I'm no help at all because I love to bake and make lots of creamy soups.
I would go on skinnytaste.com and look for the soups that don't have cream ; )
I wish. I do like to make smoothies with fruit and yogurt and protein powder. So it's not comforting, but's like a dessert.
I think finding something else to do is key. Maybe pick up a hobby that you do instead of baking/eating the baking. I love comfort food so this one is hard for me.
Zucchini bread, pumpkin bread, chowder, caramel corn. I say go on a 30 minute walk or run everyday then you can eat the food and still increase health/lose weight. Autumn foods are too wonderful to miss.
I put on 18 pounds in the last 18 months, so last week I decided to get serious about taking it off. I already exercise an hour a day, 6 days a week, so the only way for me to actually lose weight is to combine that with pretty strict dieting. That means smaller portions of very healthy balanced foods, a salad every day, drinking lots of water, and NO sugary snacks at all. It's working, but I sure picked a LOUSY time of year to do it!
As far as comfort foods, the most comforting thing I've been getting lately is cooked broccoli or a chunk of a baked sweet potato! Ha!
I'm starting with drinking a tall glass of water every time I want something not-so-great to eat. If I still REALLY want it, then I have one bite, but usually I don't want it that much any more. I AM getting plenty of water though! ;0)
I'm also getting up earlier and exercising before John leaves for work. I just started this last week, but I at least feel like I'm doing SOMETHING towards my goals!
